Hello everyone !

(Sorry my english is very basic).

After 3 years, I finally decided to create an account on Nekochan !

I'm becoming a SGI fan over the years, principaly because I am a big fan of the Nintendo64/64DD (history, dev stuff, etc). I especially love the history of digital special effects in the 80's and 90's, the hardware and the software, so it was inevitable to fall into the pot one day or another. What a pleasure to find some old gears (4D, Indigo etc) into a making off....

Like many member, my collection has grown step by step over the years. Thanks to the web and the SGI community. I think I have a lot of questions in the future, although this forum is an incredible source of information about SGI history, hardware and so on.

Finally, to make short, a photo of my setup (forget the Imac...). I'll post all the hinv later in the dedicated section.

I hope it's the good section on the forum for this topic.

The big disadvantage of this current config is to switch every station to the 1600sw (13w3/vga + vga/dvi for octane, or direct dvi for fuel etc) plus the keyboard and mouse every time you want to use a station. The 1600sw is functionnal with the 4D/25 for example (what a special config...), but with 2 adapter, the quality is far from my old CRT. But I don't want to install the old CRT every time....

The solution is to bought a classic 19" 4/3 LCD with vga and dvi to put the Octane and Fuel (4D or Indy if course) at the same time plus the O2 directly to the 1600sw and a KVM for the Keyboard and mouse. Later this year I think...

Yes, this desk was designed for the Octane, what a chance.

I use a 13w3 / VGA cable plus a classic VGA/VGI adapter. You have a switch behind the MLA to pass it in analog mode. It work with the Octane, Indigo2, Indy and Personal Iris at 1280*1024@60hz (1024*768@60hz for the 4D, it's the maximum by the VGA output).

The quality is not awfull, but "far" from the Fuel directly connected in DVI to the MLA or the O2 with the FPA. I think the best solution for the Octane with the MLA is to have a 13w3/DVI cable, but I don't have one to test if it work. It was a shame that the MLA did not have a VGA input in addition to the DVI.

I'm using principaly the O2 for the moment (R12k/400Mhz,512Mb), because the station have the FPA for the 1600sw (very clean image). For the keyboard, yes it's not the best, but you can see under the desk a 4D keyboard and an Indigo2 style keyboard.

On these photo, the Indy and 4D/25 on the 1600sw. On the first, the MLA with 13w3/VGA cable plus at the end the VGA/DVI adapter.

On the 4D, a VGA cable plus the DVI adapter (I don't know if you have the < GR1.2 without VGA output, If you can use the BNC/VGA cable plus the VGA/DVI adapter for having 1280*1024).

And last year when the Octane was coming (Thanks Ian). The desk was not in order this day...

It's interesting to see some pictures of your 4D/20. It's a TFLU chassis (front loading for the HDD), introduced in mid 1989 if I remember correctly. My 4D is dated from november 1988 and had the original chassis.

Next week, I'm certainly able to add some photo off my current ATX mod (thanks to Gerhard web site). An ideal way to revive these workstation that have too often a dead PSU.

The 36gb / 15K HDD is a good surprise, I never tried anything else than these big old 5 1/4" HDD that spin for 30sec after they were powered off...

It's clear that buttonfly run well, I'm curious to see the difference with the Turbo option.

Irix 5.3 is also a good and interesting surprise. I always read that 5.3 was only "usable" on 4D/30 or 35 with 32mb of ram at a minimum, and 4.0.5 the last "usable" version for the 4D/20 and 25. I only have the two original EOE 3.3.2 tapes, I never tried anything else....

I was in the same case. The U64 was a graal for me, I'm a big fan of N64 dev things and SGI.... 6 years with maybe 2 or 3 opportunity at high price... but two month ago a Sunday morning I finally found the graal on ebay for 49dollars (buy it now), without the joyboard.... I was just blown away and unable to wait the carrier for the delivery of the card, but everything come and it work now on my R4400/175Mhz indy with Irix 5.3.

I can only wish you a good and lucky hunt.

I have expected that you will be very stressfull before you see my answser

I'm trying to launch the maximum of things on the board, but I have some trouble with compilation on some demos that were inside the SDK. In addition, without the joybus board, you can't clearly get everything of it. I have just prepared a basic indy with 5.3 and IDO before installing the OS2.0K, just to test the card. SDK documention is so crazy that I certainly need a lot of time ot investigate all files and README to find every bit of story about this board.

Thanks to an old post on the Neko forum for some command lines about Ultra64 board....

But your right, this Ultra board is very special, especially to have a thing that was not labelled Nintendo64 but Ultra64, a 1995 piece of history. Good job for the SN devkit

. I have a 75% complete Partner Kit with an early ALPS 64DD dev drive (missing ISA / PCI board), but the ultra board is clearly easier to get working for a SGI fanatic.

I was in the same case with my Prism Deskside, a blanck HDD. Without the help from a Nekochan member, I will certainly never get this wonderfull system working. I'm not a Linux power user, that's why the installation was pretty epic (12 CD's).... SGI made good PDF with every step of the install, without that.....

I have SLES 9 SP3 + Propack 4 for Linux SP3. If I remember correctly the latest available in my Yast Update list is Propack 4 SP4 for a graphic support.

A very great find for that price

. It seems to be in very good shape. The R3000 is a wonderfull machine, and you have the chance to have a working PSU.

Your right, the first things is to change this battery. You need a TADIRAN SL-840 (old reference is 340). You can find them on ebay or in specialized shop (10€ or so). It's also easier to change this battery on R3000 than R4000.

It's very cheap to change the graphics card to XS24 (from Ian for example) to have more accelerated graphics and get access to 1280x1024, but you loose the VGA connector. The only bad thing is to find the original Keyboard and Mouse at good price because they are not PS/2. You can also find adapter to have any PS2 device on it.

It will be very lucky to have a working Irix in this spare hard drive (without password).

I recently acquired a Chyron Centaur board for my Indigo R4400 Elan.

I was suprised that a connector to the right prevented to install this board (need 3 more milimeter) on a Indigo motherboard equipped with a R4400 150Mhz, as you can see on the picture. I think it will be ok with a R4000 or a modded R4400 heatsink (much smaller).

The strange things is that on Gerhard web site we can see his Centaur board fitted inside a R4400 150Mhz system with the original heatsink. These pins are nor present and the serial number on the board is in a different place. Mine is under the board, and the number is lower.

The description of the auction was "R3000 Chyron Centaur board".

Is it possible that they made two different versions, one for R3000 and one for R4000/R4400 ? If it feet inside a modded R4400 or R4000, do I have any risk to install it ? I remember that JanJaap have made some scan of the installation manual, maybe I can find more inside.

Yeah it was on ebay, but last week only. It seems to be not very difficult to cut theses pins.

. Yes, I know, is pretty hard to have a working centaur system, but it was primarly to have a fully loaded Indigo, the classic SGI virus that many members have on this forum.... But we never know...

No connectors

. Some chips are also different. Maybe they made a later revision to fit R4400 system because the heatsink was not designed for Indigo1. I can't compare the serial number. I will certainly try to make the heatsink mod on my system, normally it will make the Indigo quieter. I have aslo a second Indigo with a R4000 so it will be ok. Maybe it's time to get a R3000 system...

Normally they were Iris board (maybe only one not but I'm not sure), I have compared to all hi res photo of Sgistuff website, you have Ethernet Excellan option card, Storage, Ip2, Fp1, BP3, DC4 etc..

Like pentium says, go with Irix 4.0.5 and you can get perfect vintage Indigo setup. It's not as slow as we can expect for a 33Mhz system. You need to change the power supply, backplane etc.. to have an IP20 system, it's much easier to find a complete R4000 system if you want one.

It's also cheap and not diificult to add a 16 or 32mb ram kit to improve the responsiveness. Also check the graphic card. Having the second generation (XS etc) can improve dramaticaly the user experience.

I think the connector is an EVC. A DVI like but with built in Firewire, USB etc... A very uncommon interface....

Juste one personnal precision about the B2600.

They were used on some Zeiss 3D Measurement machine (early 2000 era). No 3D stuff, only 2D control software and programmation of the device.

We mesure all the finished part at work with this type of machine (automotive) and It was controled by an HP B2600 on HP UX. Later, they were also using C8000 (until 2006 if I remember correctly). Now,everything was ported to Windows PC workstation.

I can just says that Zeiss price are very high, and if you want some spare parts for the B2600 or a remplacement machine, it was just crazy.... That's why the price of the PC upgrade was way lower if they take the B2600....

. If I remember correctly we can see an older release of Prisms running of Crimson on one of the "movie magic" magazine. It was about a movie with some CGI effect on a black cat.

I always wanted to found some screenshot of TDI Explore 3.x and Vertigo 9 etc, very hard to find compared to classic Alias of Softimage product (newer version)

As promised, some photo of the Alias V6.0 package. It's always a pleasure to have these big box, but they are pretty rare by now. As far as possible than new version of Autodesk Premium Suite 2014 with only a small USB key in a bag and only online PDF....

Photo are a bit blurry because i don't want to use the flash and my CAM is pretty old now. I will make better hi res image at the sun light this week.

You will find :

- Base Package
- 2 big books, with toturial etc.. Tons of info of how to connect SGI to vidéo system and video format....
- 3 small book how to install, licence, and change betwen older version and V6.
- 1 big poster with all menu. One side for Poweranimator and one side for Auto, design studio.
- 1 install Cd with small booklet
- 1 VHS with a 1h30 tutorial

It's clearly yes for me. In any case it's a bargain, especially if the power supply is ok. It will be harder and harder to find even basic a basic working sgi system in the futur, so...

It can be a spare machine (maybe you find a broken one in the futur for 10 bucks so you can add more ram, hard drive, upgradfe to 24bit, found a gio card etc..), and it will be interesting to play with it with Irix 5.3 for example. Of course, if it's a 8bit with 32mb and 540mb hard drive, il will not be a speedrunner, but it"s a lot of fun

. Last point, indy is very compact, so you can easily hide behind something....

I'm using one of my indy for my Nintendo Ultra64 dev setup, fantastic stuff. It's usefull because you can hook the output of the Ultra64 board to the composite inof the machine, so you don't need a second screen.

It's not mips related, but I also use my VW230 for a Nintendo Dolphin dev kit setup (DDH).

You need to be patient to find a very good condition system (due to size and weigh and full metal skin, scuff are common...). They are harder to find now than two or three years ago.

Full metal chassis, great color and front panel, sgi cube logo, not so loud when idle.... Side panel are heavy like hell...

do you code or also create gfx stuff? or both?

Unfortunately I'm not a good coder.... At the base I'm a small Nintendo game collector, especially the Nintendo 64, so SGI was cleary a target for me after 1995. I only acquired my first SGI in 2007 when I started to work.... Now I'm more focusing on old console development setup than pure gaming, like Ultra64 dev board, Dolphin setup, Gameboy advance. i really like to have complete fonctionnal setup, searching old documentation, compiling early history of the system etc... But it's really difficult to find hardware and software for these beast

Here some screenshot of my ultra64 board (you can see in console the specs of the u64 board and in the capture area a 3D demo of the U64 SDK, with the output of the console connected to the video in of the indy). More to come later.

I found the board on ebay two years ago for 49€

I 'don't have the complete doc set and cd. I'm also missing a big part, the small pcb to connect the output of the board to the N64 joypad, so many demo are not usable. It's the biggest problem, if you don't find a complete package (maybe one time per year on ebay at maximum) you can take ages to find all missing parts....

So I have used a spare R4400 175mhz/128mb/XL24 Indy, installed Irix 5.3 and all the U64 software I was able to find at the moment to make this board working.

Incredible !

It's so hard to find information and screenshot about these powerfull old software from the coff era. You're review is definitively the best ressource available for understanding prism, i really love this old style poweruser interface that make me every time crazy when I see some old SGi footage !

PS : If I remember is this software that is used on one of the video magazine "Movie Magic" on Crimson, with a side terminal ? The guy is typing command line that make crazy automated things..)
