For region free-ness, you certainly need a mod chip, it would be quite difficult to source one of those these days me thinks o.0

It makes a lovely recording station with Logic 8 or Logic 9. Can't do much of plugins and mixing. Goes well with LiveStage too.
Or a computer for writing and programming when you don't want to be too disturbed by the Interwebs. The keyboard is way better than the super shallow key travel keyboards of nowadays.
I know of a modchip called the Phantom that's still in production but I don't believe it's region-free. I'd love to add a region-free BIOS too but then I'd have to find someone who can remove and replace SMD components...

be careful about getting any water or alcohol around the keyboard and touchpad. They seem to be very sensitive to contaminants.
I just plunked down for an
SX Andromeda II
from Rondo Music. It's basically the 4-string deluxe version (single-piece neck, high-mass bridge, better tuners) of their Jazz Bass clone I already own. I've found that to be a majorly sweet instrument, but after some serious consideration I find that the low B-string mostly just gets in my way and rarely gets used for anything other than a makeshift thumb-rest. I figure I'm going to sell off my little Ibanez and try this; if I don't find myself seriously missing the 5-string, as I expect I won't, I'll probably sell that as well, and be down to one really nice hollow-body short-scale bass and one really nice solid-body medium-scale one (and have a little more space in my living room!)

Very cool! I hadn't realized that Rondo Music still was around. They started as a small family business a few blocks down the road from where I grew up in NJ. I used to go there often as a teenager and drool over the idea of someday buying a Les Paul. (At the time, the most I could afford was a cheap, no-name, imitation model.) Unfortunately, the main store closed at least a decade ago. When it closed, I heard that one of the family members was going to try to make a go of it as an online store run out of New Hampshire. Nice to hear that they are still in business!
Interesting! I only found out about them when I got that 5-string Jazz Bass clone off of Craigslist, but I've been genuinely amazed by how nice an instrument it is considering they sell for $150-250 depending on the model. I went down to a pawn shop this afternoon just to satisfy my curiousity by trying a genuine Fender version, and it really wasn't any nicer than their clone. Looking forward to seeing what the deluxe model is like.
