1.2 Supported_Hardware
The IRIX 5.2 product set has been qualified to support all
current and prior Silicon Graphics workstations and servers
except those that have been obsoleted. Obsoleted platforms
include 4D60G, 4D60T, 4D70G, and 4D70-based servers.
- 2 -
1.3 Software_Compatibility
The IRIX 5.2 product supports two levels of compatibility
with IRIX 4.0.x. Compatibility at the binary level includes
full support for programs that have been compiled and linked
under IRIX 4.0.1 and later. Exceptions to the binary
compatibility support include products that access /proc or
/debug, use kernel data structures, rely on old defects, or
use static libraries instead of shared libraries.
IRIX 5.2 also supports ``link and execution'' compatibility.
This capability is provided for those products for which all
of the .o and .a files cannot be recompiled with IRIX 5.2
tools. The IRIX 5.2 compilation tools do not support
linking objects built in an IRIX 4 environment (COFF format)
with objects built in an IRIX 5 environment (ELF). It is
not possible to link .o or .a files, unless they are all
compiled with IRIX 5.2 tools or are all compiled with IRIX
4.0.x or the IRIX 4 compatibility tools.
None of the new features of IRIX 5.2 are available in the
IRIX 4 compatibility build environment, except an upgraded
libmpc.a library to allow Power Fortran Accelerator
applications to run MP on CHALLENGE/Onyx.
Products ported to IRIX 5.2 can continue to operate as they
have in the past. Products that have not been ported to
IRIX 5.2 can take advantage of the ``link and execution''
compatibility. To do this, you must install the appropriate
irix4_* products on your system. The tools, libraries, and
headers for those products are installed in the directory
/usr/irix4. The products being linked must then set the
environment variable SGI_IRIX4. This signals the native
IRIX 5.2 tools that you really want to invoke the tools in
/usr/irix4 and use headers and libraries from that
environment. The resulting binaries work properly on IRIX
5.2. The ``link and execution'' compatibility mode is not
designed for creating binaries that are to be transported to
other IRIX versions.
A few notes about using the IRIX 4 compatibility build
environment:
o Ignore a compiler warning about -mips2: for example,
f77: Warning: can't mix -mips[2] with shared, change to
non_shared. This does not affect the compilation and
linking.
o If there are undefined symbols, and the linking worked
on 4.0.x, add one of these two sets of arguments to
your cc or f77 command line:
- 3 -
-nostdlib -L/usr/irix4/usr/lib
-nostdlib -L/usr/irix4/usr/lib -
L/usr/irix4/usr/lib/mips2
o If the compilation is -mp, add -lI77_mp -lmpc at the
end of the command line.
o Because of a bug, multiple defined symbols have become
a hard error. The workaround for this is to use -Wl,-
ignore_unresolved on the cc or f77 command line.
o The .uid file format has changed from IRIX 4 to IRIX 5.
The native IRIX 5 uil compiler does not deal with IRIX
4 compatibility. If you need an IRIX 4 format .uid
file, you need to create it by using the IRIX 4
compatibility build environment uil compiler,
/usr/irix4/usr/bin/X11/uil.
IRIX 4.0.x compatibility comes at the expense of additional
disk and memory use. Disk-constrained systems might not be
able to take advantage of the compatibility features.
Memory-constrained systems might experience performance
degradations. The two compatibility modes should be used
during the transition phase of products ported from the IRIX
4.0.x environment to the IRIX 5.2 environment.
1.4 Installation_Information
The IRIS Software Installation Guide or your Owners Guide
describes the general installation procedure for IRIX 5.2
and all optional products. In addition, the Release Notes
for each installable product in the IRIX Execution
Environment includes product-specific installation
information.
The IRIX 5.2 Execution Environment can be installed on a
formatted empty disk or over any previous operating system
release, such as IRIX 3.3, IRIX 4.0, and IRIX 4.0.1 through
