I have recently acquired a O2 with R5000 300Mhz processor and 128Mb of RAM. It was running Irix 6.5 but I've decided to do a clean install of Irix on it.

I did a sequential scan in fx to check for bad sectors on the hard drive after which I started reinstallation according to Ian's page. I could get the Installation tools CD (June 1998) to read but as soon as the progress bar reaches 100% the screen goes blank. Tried numerous times but it's exactly the same every time.

I had searched all over for a fix but could not find anything. Any ideas and help greatly appreciated. Perhaps it's something trivial which I don't know as I'm only starting to play with SGI. Thanks.

Had come across this problem also on the O2's ... there is an issue installing Irix 6.5 base version onto the O2 that does cause problems. It is necessary to go with a slightly newer version 6.5.x, so try to get hold of a more recent overlay with the 1998 base set.

Correct. I forget which version of IRIX is needed - 6.5.4, perhaps.

True enough I needed a newer version of Irix. Borrowed the Irix 6.5.30 CD set from a colleague and it seems to work alright. Progress bar read to 100% then the normal Inst menu came up. Have yet to complete the reinstallation, perhaps this weekend when time permits.
